Zonguldak, Osmanlı döneminde 'lardan itibaren demiryolu ağının gelişmesi ve donanma filosunun güçlenmesinde önemli rol oynayarak ülkede Sanayi Devrimi'nin lokomotifi olmuştur. Zonguldak kömürü, ayrıca Cumhuriyet döneminde Ereğli ve Karabük'te iki adet demir çelik fabrikasının kurulmasını sağlamış ve bunları ülke sanayiinin önemli bir parçası haline getirmiştir. Kuruluş serüveni 'lü yılların sonunda kömüre bağlı olarak başlayan Zonguldak kenti hep kömürle iç içe yaşamış, hala da kömürle birlikte yaşamaktadır. Ana kent ve ona bitişik olarak gelişen Kozlu, Kilimli, Çatalağzı ve Gelik yerleşimleri bir bütündür yaşam biçimi benzerdir. Ancak her bir kent parçası diğeriyle ve merkez Zonguldak ile sıkı bağlantılı olsa da, kömür ocakları, kömür işleme ve dağıtım yerleri, yönetim binaları, işçi ve memur lojmanları ile kendine özgü bir kimliğe sahip olmuştur. Bu yaşam biçimi özellikle son 20 yılda epeyce gerilese de, günümüzde kömür ocakları ve kömüre bağlı sanayi Zonguldak'ta gençlerin hala ekmek kapısı durumundadır. Buna karşılık Zonguldak halkı kömürün zararlarından da nasibini fazlasıyla almaktadır. Grizu patlamaları, göçükler, başka iş kazaları nedeniyle ölümler, yaralanmalar, sakat kalmalar, hava kirliliğinin olumsuz etkileri ile de birlikte yaşamak durumundadır. Yani Zonguldak'ta günlük hayat hep kömürle iç içedir. Bu calismada, komurle beraber ortaya cikan Zonguldak in Cumhuriyet rejimi ile birlikte tecrube etmeye basladigi sosyal, kulturel, siyasi ve ekonomik degisimler incelenmistir. Cumhuriyet in ilan edilmesiyle birlikte yeni yonetimin bolgede var olanlar uzerine neler eklemis oldugunu sorgulayan bu calismada, sehirde var olan Bati etkisi ve kulturuyle, sehri devralan Cumhuriyet in eklemlenme sureci tartisilmistir. Arastirmamizda sehirde Cumhuriyet in ilanindan sonraki degisimler on plana cikmis olsa da, sehri meydana getiren unsurlar ve bunlarin gecmisle olan bagini kurmak adina bazen bu tarihlemenin de gerilerine gidilmistir. Cumhuriyet in ilanini baslangic noktasi belirleyen bu calisma, cok partili donemin baslangiciyla sinirlandirilmistir. Zonguldak Municipality and Zonguldak Governorship employees were interviewed about the factors that make the city stand out in tourism activities, and the elements representing the urban identity were examined on-site by going to the study area. Hard coal, miners, sea, caves, steep and winding roads, and being a republic city are the prominent urban identity elements of Zonguldak. However, it has been understood that the working class and culture, which has been dominant in Zonguldak for years, is being damaged due to the deteriorated economy and immigration. In this respect, examples of cities where various studies have been carried out to prevent migration and protect urban identity with the decrease of mineral reserves in the world are presented.
